    Club History

In 1966 the Mid-Illinois Retriever Club became the successor to the
Wee-Ma-Tuk Retriever Club, which was founded in 1959. While the membership is widespread in Central Illinois, most members have come for the Peoria-Pekin-Canton area. The club began holding informal AKC sanctioned trials and in 1964 held its first licensed trial. In these field trials, dogs compete against each other.

The Mid-Illinois Retriever Club has become not only a training ground for hunting retrievers, but a developer of nationally recognized field trial dogs. The club has accounted for its share of Field Champions and qualifiers for National Championship Stakes. Out of a total of 82 retrievers that qualified for the National Championship Stake in 1985, four were from the Mid-Illinois Retriever Club. This trend continues to date. The informal one-day sanctioned trials were the backbone of the Mid-Illinois Retriever Club. The stakes consisted of Open, Qualifying, Derby, Shooting Dog, and Puppy.

In 1987, the club held its first AKC Hunting Test in which dogs perform against a standard instead of against each other. In hunting tests, dogs perform under conditions that simulate as nearly as possible, those met in a true hunting situation. In AKC licensed Hunting Tests, a permanent record is maintained by the AKC of dogs that achieve qualifying scores. Hunt test titles that can be earned are Junior Hunter, Senior Hunter, and Master Hunter.

In Field Trials, titles of Field Champion and Amateur Field Champion, and in Hunting Tests, Junior, Senior, and Master Hunter Certificates are prized by working retriever owners. Pursuit of these titles provides many hours of pleasure, excitement, satisfaction, and most important, produces a better duck dog.

We invite your interest and inquiry.
